The Bread of Life     John 6:27-35

This post discusses the meaning of Jesus as the Bread of Life.

‘The Bread of Life’ concerns what Jesus said about Himself. The next day after feeding 5000 miraculously, the crowd found Jesus on the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus knew what they wanted—more free food. He then taught them to look for ‘better food,’ John 6:27. “Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you.” All men need this food provided by Jesus for eternal life.

So, this answer caused a question by the crowd, John 6:28. “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?”  Jesus tells them plainly, John 6:29. “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” They should believe Him.

Instead, they remain focused on free food and reminded Jesus that Moses gave them manna. But Jesus corrects them that God gave them the manna. They should seek this bread from heaven, John 6:32-33. “I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

However, the crowd did not seem to understand and continued to seek physical food.

Then, Jesus explains clearly, John 6:35. “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. Jesus stresses the point of His discussion—they should believe on Him—the bread from God.

So, what did we learn?

1.The crowds remained focused on free food.

2.Jesus is the source of spiritual food—the Bread of Life—that gives eternal life.
