Tares Among Wheat Matthew 13:24-42

This post discusses the meaning of Jesus’ parable about tares sown among the wheat.

Tares among wheat shows Satan sowing tares or weeds in the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 13:24-26, “…another parable… “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field, but while his men were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat and went away. So, when the plants came up and bore grain, then the weeds appeared also.”

When the servants observed the weeds, tthey asked the master if they should pull them up. He answered, “No,” because extracting the weeds would uproot the wheat. Instead, gathering and burning of weeds would occur at harvest.

Later, Jesus interpreted the meaning of the parable for His disciples, Matthew 13:37-42. “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. The field is the world, and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sowed them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels.”

So, from Jesus’ words, the following facts emerge. 1.This parable discusses the world-wide church, not individual congregations. 2.The removal occurs on Judgment Day by angels, not earlier by any person or group of persons. 3.The wicked will find themselves thrown into hell to burn for all eternity. 4.Those removed and burned by the angels thought of themselves as members of the church.

History shows numerous examples of the removal of people from existing churches and burning them at the stake. For example, the Catholic inquisition beginning about 1184 A.D. burned people inside and even those outside of the church thought to be heretics or Jews.

Thus, this parable shows that God did not authorize human executioners.

Angels will conduct this task at judgement. (Congregations can withdraw fellowship from erring members that will not repent to try to restore them, 2 Thessalonians 3:6.)

So, what did we learn?

1.At judgment, Jesus’ angels will remove all the servants of the Devil thought of as church members and send them to hell.

2.Churches are not authorized to remove and execute wicked church members.
