Sixth Sign John 9:3
This post covers the sixth sign recorded by John.
‘Sixth Sign’ discusses the remarkable miracle of giving sight to a man born blind. No cure exists for congenital blindness. Jesus’ disciples asked if some sin resulted in the blindness at birth of a man. Jesus replied, John 9:3. “It was not that this man sinned, or his parents, but that the works of God might be displayed in him.” At this time, this man would get to experience the mighty works of God!
Note: some things in nature happen to everyone, Matthew 5:45. “For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” Congenital blindness and other similar problems occur to many.
Then, Jesus made mud, covered the blind man’s eyes with the mud, and told him to wash in the Siloam Pool. When he obeyed, Jesus performed the miracle on his eyes.
Note, this situation compares to us today concerning salvation. This man believed, obeyed a command, and received the blessing. Jesus gives us a command, Mark 16;16. “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” So, we begin with belief in Jesus, hear His commands, and obey to obtain salvation.
This fits what Annanias told Saul, Act 22:16. “And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and wash away your sins…” Thus, we need obedience to obtain the blessing.
Then, a long discussion followed of the healed man with the neighbors and the Pharisees as to who did the miracle and the identity of the formerly blind beggar. The faith of the man increased step by step until later when he faced Jesus, he proclaimed his faith and worshipped.
Note, the man had to come to faith by himself without Jesus being physically present. Likewise, we, too, must come to faith by reading the Bible without Jesus being present.
So, what did we learn?
1.Jesus has the power to correct a flaw of birth.
2.The recipient of the miracle developed faith in Jesus without being physically with Jesus.
3.Obedience to Jesus’ command provided the blessing.
4.We need to obey to obtain salvation.
