Salt and Light   Matthew 5:13-16

This post concerns two essential characteristics of Christians: salt and light

Salt and Light—common in every house—were chosen by Jesus to stress how Christians should live, Matthew 5:13-16. “You … the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness …restored…no longer good for anything except…thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. You… the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot… hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”  In Jesus’ day, use of salt as a preservative especially for meat was known by everyone. To accomplish anything at night, light from a lamp was necessary.

These admonitions of salt and light have a two-fold application—to self and to the world.

A Christian can lose his effectiveness as a preservative and light when he stops worshipping or reading and studying God’s word. At that point, his preservative and light-giving powers to the world become mute.

Instead, the Christian has a two-fold duty toward the world. He serves as a light for God’s word and an example before the world of the good works of a child of God. This effort gives glory to God who surely deserves glory.

So, what did we learn?

1.Christians should preserve their salvation by exhibiting proper behavior to the world.

2.Failing to worship or to read and study God’s word causes their example light to fail.

3.Our good works should reflect glory to God.
