Prophecy and Miracle Luke 18:31-43
This post covers a prophecy by Jesus and a miracle.
This passage in Luke discusses what Jesus said to the twelve about His death followed by a miracle near Jericho.
Jesus and the twelve were part of a crowd on their way to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover. Everyone was expecting something great to happen, like the beginning of the physical kingdom.
Jesus talked to the twelve directly, perhaps to guide their thinking, Luke 18:31-33. “…everything …written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished… delivered over to the Gentiles and… mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.”
However, the twelve did not fully comprehend what He was saying, perhaps thinking about the new kingdom and their positions in it. This misunderstanding of what was about to happen remained with the twelve until after the resurrection. Then, they would slowly understand.
At this point, as Jesus and the crowd neared Jericho, a blind man asked what was happening. When told about Jesus, he called out “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.” Apparently, he had heard about Jesus’ miraculous power and believed in Jesus’ Deity because he used an often-cited name, Son of David, for the Messiah. He asked for his sight, which only Jesus could provide, Luke 18:41-42. “Jesus asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” …, “Lord, let me recover my sight.” And Jesus said to him, “Recover your sight; your faith has made you well.”
Thereafter, the blind man and the crowd praised God. Seeing this happen may have confirmed their hopes that Jesus would soon establish a physical kingdom.
This happening seems to begin Jesus’ public declaration as the Messiah because He cured a blind man as was prophesied in Isaiah and allowed the designation, Son of David, to go unchallenged in the presence of the crowd.
So, what did we learn?
1.The twelve could not comprehend Jesus’ death and resurrection.
2.The blind man called Jesus Son of David.
3.Jesus allowed public declaration of himself as the Messiah.
