Money Use Luke 16:1-18
This post concerns money use.
Money Use as a post focuses on what a man did with another’s money.
In the previous chapter, Jesus told parables to grumbling Pharisees about the value of the lost returning to God.
Now, He spoke a parable to His disciples in the presence of the Pharisees about managing money. The parable describes the fraud of a rich man by his money manager, Luke 16:1. “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was wasting his possessions.”
As a result, the rich man fired the manager.
Consequently, the manager thought about what he should do next, Luke 16:4. “I have decided what to do, so that when I am removed from management, people may receive me into their houses.’’ Moreover, he did not decide to repent and plead for forgiveness. He only thought of helping himself survive.
So, instead of repenting, he called in all the rich man’s debtors and involved them also in fraud by reducing what they owed.
When the master found out, he commended the servant’s shrewdness—not his stealing or fraud. The lesson to the disciples involved comparing them to worldly people who were wise in the use of money. Thus, disciples should wisely use their assets, Luke 16;9. “… make friends for yourselves by means of unrighteous wealth, so that when it fails, they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.”
Then, Jesus said that they needed to be faithful over what they have if they expect God to give them eternal riches. Further, they could not serve God and money.
However, the Pharisees ridiculed Him. Jesus, aware of their attitude and justification of themselves, said their lives were an abomination to God.
Next, He pointed to people trying to force themselves into the Kingdom of God without obeying Moses’ Law. Because God knew their hearts, it wouldn’t work.
Then, He gives an example which showed that their teachings on marriage and adultery had loosened what God said about divorce. They were not teaching God’s word exactly.
So, what did we learn?
1.Christians should wisely use their money to achieve a home in heaven.
2.Correct obedience involves exact observance of God’s Law.
