Little Faith and Attitude Luke 9:37-50
This post concerns little faith and the attitude of the disciples about greatness.
Little Faith and Attitude describes the disciples and a father after a failed attempt to cure a sick boy, Luke 9:38-40. “a man …cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son… a spirit seizes him… It convulses him …And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.” This occasion continued the training of the disciples.
The day before with Jesus on the transfiguration mountain, the nine disciples remaining below could not heal a demon-possessed boy. The father asked Jesus to heal his son. Jesus ascribed the earlier failure to a lack of faith in the disciples and the man. Then He healed the boy.
The majesty of God exhibited in this miracle caused astonishment.
Note, this miracle occurred after the revelation of the majesty of God on the transfiguration mount.
Jesus immediately continued His training of his disciples by reminding them of what He said, Luke 9:44. “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.” Apparently, they were not ready to receive this information. Instead, they argued about greatness.
Then, Jesus refutes their ideas about greatness with a child by His side, Luke 9:48. “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”
Thus, incorporating the faith and modesty of a child should help to accept the words and teachings of Jesus and God. Then, He designated the least one among them as great.
Next, Jesus said that those people not against Him consist of those for Him.
(The corollary appeared later—see chap. 11:23. People not with Jesus make up those against Him.) Overall, Jesus teaches that neutrality cannot exist. We must decide to stand with Jesus, or we will automatically stand against Him.
So, what did we learn?
1.Apostles need faith.
2.Humbleness and lowliness designate greatness to Jesus.
