Why was it “unlawful to put anyone to death” for the Jews? John 18:28-32

A death penalty could only be carried out by the ruling Romans. Pilot knew Jesus was delivered because of envy, Matt. 27:18. He sidestepped judgment by saying, “Judge Him by your law.” Then the Jews were forced to clarify that they wanted Jesus killed by the Roman method of execution: crucifixion. But they had no power to do so. This admission began sealing Jesus’ fate. He had prophesied that He would be lifted up, John 12:32.
