Why quote Zechariah 9:9 when Jesus entered Jerusalem? John 12:12-16

The people were saying ‘the king, Jesus, is coming in the name of the Lord sitting on a donkey’s colt’ as prophesied by Zechariah. The disciples later understood the significance of this passage. In Zech. 9:10 Jesus would cut off the chariot, the war horse, and the bow. Jesus chose a donkey and not a war horse to specifically teach that his kingdom would be peaceful. This meant that Jesus would not lead an army against the Romans.
