JESUS LOST Luke 2:41-52
‘Jesus lost’ explores His parents leaving Him behind.
At twelve years of age, Jesus traveled to Jerusalem with Mary and Joseph and attended the Feast of the Passover ‘according to the custom’ of the family. This information implies that Jesus’ family worshipped regularly in the manner of faithful Jews. At the end of the feast, Joseph and Mary started home and assumed that Jesus traveled with friends and relatives. Instead of going toward home, Jesus stayed behind. As a result, at the end of the first day of travel, the parents could not find Him in the group going homeward. In a word, they worried and considered Jesus lost.
Immediately, they returned to Jerusalem looking for Jesus. On the third day, they found Him in the temple, listening to and talking to the teachers. His answers and questions amazed the teachers. At this point, Mary seemed unhappy, “why have you treated us this way? We searched for you in great distress.” Jesus replied, “Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” In His reply, Jesus strongly implied that they should have looked in the temple first. In fact, He had not left them. They had left Him. In this incident, In any event, Mary and Joseph did not understand what Jesus meant.
Afterward, Jesus went home with His parents and submitted to them. What’s more, Mary deliberately remembered all that had happened. As He grew up, He increased in stature and wisdom and favor with God and the community.
Surprisingly, Luke only includes this scant material about Jesus’ childhood. Thus, God did not feel that we need other information.
What does this incident teach?
1.Jesus’ parents were faithful, God-fearing Jews worshipping God ‘according to custom.’
2.This incident illustrated to His parents that seeking God’s word and the temple of God would characterize His life.
3.Jesus obeyed His earthly parents
