Jericho     Joshua 6:1-10

This post concerns God’s instructions for the capture of the city of Jericho.

Jericho as a post discusses the obedience that went into the fall of Jericho. Just after crossing the Jordan river, the Children of Israel encountered the formidable city of Jericho on their route to the Promised Land, Joshua 6:1. “Now Jericho was shut up inside and outside because of the people of Israel. None went out, and none came in.” Perhaps, to some, Jericho appeared as an impossible obstacle to conquering the land.

However, God spoke to Joshua, Joshua 6:2. “See, I have given Jericho into your hand, with its king and mighty men of valor.” Then, He told Joshua how to proceed. They were to march around the city in a specified order—mighty men first, then seven priest blowing horns in front of the Ark. Last would come the rear guard of the people.

This march would occur once per day for six days. They were to be silent as they marched. Then, on the seventh day, they were to march around Jericho seven times. Next, the horns would blast, and Joshua would tell the people to shout. At that point, the wall would fall down.

Consider this as a military plan. What military man would propose or accept it? None.

Of course, it worked exactly as God promised, and they conquered the city.

Before they began, Joshua impressed upon the people to have complete silence as they walked, Joshua 6:10. “But Joshua commanded the people, “You shall not shout or make your voice heard, neither shall any word go out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout.”

To understand the lesson of Jericho, ask yourself at what point did the promised blessing of conquering the city occur? Not on days one through six or on circumferences 1-7 on day 7. Instead, the walls fell down when the people shouted and thus, completely obeyed God’s instructions.

Today, we should expect the same. We will receive a home in heaven when we obey God completely.

So, what did we learn?

1.God gave instructions to take Jericho.

2.The blessing occurred when the instructions were followed exactly and completely.
