Hypocrisy Luke 12:1-7
This post concerns Jesus teaching his disciples about hypocrisy.
‘Hypocrisy’ as a post covers Jesus teaching his disciples about the influence of the Pharisees. Jesus focuses on leaven, Luke 12:1. “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.” Jesus uses leaven to illustrate hypocrisy. Leaven influences everything it touches. Hypocrisy, acting one way but mentally holding a different view, like leaven touches everything.
These solemn warnings about bad influences applies to us today.
Listen to the Apostle Paul warn us, 1 Corinthians 15:33. “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” Bad company like leaven will lead us into hypocrisy and sin.
In particular, Jesus’ disciples should not act like they agree with the Pharisees in daily life. Jesus warns that such action will appear on the judgment day, Luke 12:2-3. “Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. Therefore whatever you have said in the dark …heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms … proclaimed on the housetops.” Everything we have said will appear at judgment.
They were to resist seeking honor from men and then fearing what men would do to them, Luke 12:5. “But I will warn you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.” Instead, they should fear God who could condemn them to hell for hypocrisy or sin.
Then, Jesus gives a lesser to the greater argument: If God cares for sparrows, He will surely care for them, because God’s servants are more valuable than birds. God will care for us as we live among the temptations and daily threats of life.
So, what did we learn?
1.We should watch what influences us.
2.Hypocrisy should not characterize the disciple.
3.Our lifestyle will appear at the final judgment.
