HEAVEN BY PETER 1 Peter 1:3-9
This post covers how Peter depicted heaven in 1 Peter 1:3-9
The Apostle Peter blesses God, and then interweaves heaven throughout the remainder of his six-verse doxology, 1 Peter 1:3-7:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith— more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire— may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
In these verses, Peter says that by the mercy of God we have a living hope that comes when we are born again and by the resurrection of Jesus. This means that the living hope—a home in heaven—depends on subjecting ourselves to baptism—a new spiritual birth. Then, the resurrection of Jesus provides the power for gaining heaven—the living hope.
This hope described as an inheritance has four characteristics: imperishable, undefiled, and unfading nature and residing in heaven and guarded by the power of God.
Our faith sustains us until the time that Jesus will return to render judgment to the entire earth.
Although grieved by trials and difficulties while living on the earth, we rejoice because we have a sure inheritance. This deep rejoicing and gratitude should comprise every day of our lives despite hardships. Also, the happiness of the Christian influences others to look forward to eternity with joy.
In addition, these verses depict the past, the present, and the future.
A rebirth by baptism occurred in the past. At the present, a deep and rejoicing spirit occurs because God is caring for our future inheritance. The future for us holds a revelation of heaven at the return of Jesus.
The genuineness of this faith provides glory and honor when Jesus comes and rewards us with this home in heaven.
What does this doxology teach?
1.An inheritance preserved by God awaits us in Heaven.
2.Despite discouragements on this earth, we have joy as we look forward to this inheritance.
