Feeding 5000     John 6:5-14

This post covers Jesus feeding 5000, the fourth sign in the gospel of John.

Feeding 5000 discusses an important sign that Jesus did and recorded by John. Jesus saw a crowd, John 6:5-6. “Lifting up his eyes, then, and seeing that a large crowd was coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these people may eat?” He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he would do.”

Philip immediately thought of the practicality of the request, John 6:7. “Two hundred denarii worth of bread would not be enough for each of them to get a little.”

At that point, Andrew spoke up, John 6:8-9 “One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?”

Jesus told the audience of 5000 men to sit down. Then He prayed and distributed the food, John 6:11. “Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted.”

Thus, Jesus did a creative miracle, multiplying five loaves and two fish to feed 5000.

So, when they had eaten, the apostles gathered up the remaining uneaten pieces—twelve baskets. Note, Jesus created more than enough.

Then, the crowd drew a conclusion, John 6:14. “When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!”

At that point, the crowd referenced a prophecy of Moses’, Deuteronomy 18:15. “The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brothers— it is to him you shall listen—”

A reaction followed, John 6:15. “Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.”

So, what did we learn?

1.Jesus can miraculously create food.

2.This miracle reminded the people of Moses’ prophecy of a prophet to come.

3.When the people wanted Jesus as king, He refused.
