Blasphemy      Luke 12:8-12

This post stresses the speech of Jesus’ disciples.

‘Blasphemy’ as a post analyzes Jesus’ disciples’ speech. In the future, the disciples would face temptation to deny Jesus. So, He covers this situation with a truism, Luke 12:8-9 “And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.” Acknowledgement brings acknowledgement by Jesus. Denial brings denial.

In this scripture, Jesus divides those who deny Him and blaspheme into two classes:

Consider firstly, those that speak against Jesus as a person. They can have forgiveness if they confess their sin, 1 John 1:9. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Let the Jews who crucified Jesus serve as examples. Peter offered the then believers forgiveness when they repented and were baptized, Acts 2:38. “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins,”

The second class of people blaspheme against the Holy Spirit. That is, they refuse to accept what the Holy Spirit has produced—the Bible. Forgiveness can’t occur because they won’t confess their sins and turn their backs on the word of God. But when they forsake God’s word, blaspheme, nothing else exists to which they can turn for forgiveness and salvation.

Thus, Jesus and the Bible were the last things that God did or will ever do to provide salvation.

So, to blaspheme (deny Jesus and God’s word) leaves one with nowhere to turn.

Then, Jesus offered comfort for future times when His disciples would face authorities trying to force them to deny Him, Luke 12:12. “…for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”  The Holy Spirit offers help at that time.

So, what did we learn?

1.If we deny Jesus and then confess our sin, God will forgive us.

2.If we blaspheme or reject the work of the Holy Spirit, the word of God, there is no forgiveness.
