Worship in Spirit John 4:23; Isaiah 6:1-8
This post comprises a discussion of worship in spirit.
Therefore, ‘Worship in Spirit’ explores what Jesus said about worship, John 4:23. “… the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth…” So, worship in truth involves the five acts (singing, praying, giving, preaching or Bible study, partaking of the Lord’s Supper) as practiced by the New Testament church. Then, worship in spirit requires the use of the mind to glorify God.
Also, Isaiah provides an excellent example of mental worship, Isaiah 6:1-6. “I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up…. Above him stood the seraphim. Each had six wings… And one called to another and said:
…“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;
the whole earth is full of his glory!
… And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips…”
…Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal… And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”
…And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”
Note the mental actions of Isaiah.
1.Isaiah sees God and recognizes His holy nature. 2.He recognizes his own sinful nature. 3.God atones for his sins by sending the seraphim to take them away. 4.In answer to God’s question of “whom shall I send?” Isaiah volunteers to speak for God on this earth.
Therefore, worshipping in spirit should involve all four of the above mental responses.
1.We think of God and His holiness. 2.We recognize our sins. 3.We utilize God’s forgiveness. 4.We resolve to take God’s message to the world.
So, what did we learn?
1.We need to involve our minds to worship in spirit.
2.We will recognize our sinful nature, obtain God’s forgiveness, and resolve to do our part to take the gospel to the world.
