#29 Question: Who killed Jesus? 1 Peter 2:4
Did you grow up with older siblings? Older brothers or sisters often influence a younger sibling to do something wrong. Then they get punished for it. Usually, their conscience will plague them after such an incident. They were responsible. But you were punished. This post discusses who killed Jesus and consciences.
Who was responsible for Jesus’ death? Any guilty consciences?
Here are four answers.
- Pilate allowed it to happen although Jesus was innocent, Luke 23:22-24:
“A third time he said to them, “Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no guilt deserving death. I will therefore punish and release him.” But they were urgent, demanding with loud cries that he should be crucified. And their voices prevailed. Pilate decided that their demands be granted.”
Pilot killed Jesus and should have had a guilty conscience.
- Consider the Roman soldiers who carried out the execution. They killed Jesus. Yet they received only small criticism in history. They were just obeying Pilate. In this way they physically murdered Jesus while obeying orders. Did they feel bad due to their work?
- Consider the Jews. They killed Jesus. They cried “Crucify Him” until Pilate relented. On the day of Pentecost, Peter charged them with Jesus’ death, Acts 2:23:
“this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.”
They felt bad enough to ask Peter what they should do to correct this terrible sin. Peter answered, Acts 2:38:
“Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins,”
This was God’s answer to how to receive forgiveness.
The Jews of Jesus’ day killed Jesus. Jewish people today did not.
- The fact that the death of Jesus was God’s plan, and He knew it would happen shows that the responsibility for killing Jesus lies mainly elsewhere. Peter explains, 1 Peter 2:24:
“He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”
What Peter is saying is that Jesus died on the cross to make amends for our sins. The sins of people are responsible for God having to send His Son to the earth to die to atone for our sins. If there had not been sins by humanity, there would not have been a need for Jesus to die.
Further, this was due to the love of God for us, Romans 5:8, “…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
5. What this means: There are three others that share in the blame for the death of Jesus. My sins and the sins of individuals are mainly responsible for Jesus needing to go to the cross. This answers the question posed in the title.
