#14 On the Nature of God: The OMNIPOTENCE of GOD
In order to understand God and His nature, we need to understand His omnipotence. This means that His power knows no limit as is implied in God’s rhetorical question to Jeremiah, chapter 32, verses 26-27:
“The word of the LORD came to Jeremiah: “Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?”
Perhaps the greatest illustration of God’s power is creation, Genesis 1:1:
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
Creation was an outpouring of the power of God. From nothing, He created the earth, the sun, the moon, the planets and the stars. He then placed them millions of miles apart and in gigantic orbits as He chose. He used His great power to give the universe and the earth a beginning, a time zero.
But creation was not all that illustrated the power of God. He was able to infuse Deity into a human body. An angel made known this seemingly impossible feat to Mary, Luke 1:35-37:
“And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore, the child to be born will be called holy—the Son of God… For nothing will be impossible with God.”
It occurred just as the angel prophesied, Luke 1:18:
“Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.”
Mary’s betrothed husband, Joseph, decided that he should divorce her. But an angel guided him, Luke 1:20-21:
“An angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
Later in Jesus’ lifetime, He showed the power of God by promising an eternal home in heaven for his disciples, John 14:1-3:
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.”
Therefore, God has the power to prepare heaven as an eternal abode for His people.
God’s power to do miracles should have a significant impact on the beliefs of mankind. For example, God rolled back the waters of the Red Sea so His people could cross and escape the Egyptian army, Exodus 14:21-22:
“Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.”
During the New Testament days, Jesus raised Lazarus who had been dead four days. At the same time, He indicated that the reason for miracles was to cause belief. Martha was hesitant to believe and said that by the fourth day the body would be decayed. But Jesus said that she would see the glory of God, John 11:41-44:
“… And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said these things, he cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out.” The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him…”
Miracles prove that Jesus is the Son of God.
At the end of time, God has the power to destroy the world, 2 Peter 3:5-7, 10
“…the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly…
…But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.”
God had the power to destroy the world by water in the flood. As the above scripture tells us, He has the power to destroy the world by fire and will do so.
Finally, God has the power to judge the world on judgment day, 2 Corinthians 5:10:
“… we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.”
At that judgment, that same power will assign to each of us our eternal fate, either in heaven or hell.
God’s omnipotence is part of His nature.
