#13 On the Nature of God: the OMNIPRESENCE of GOD
Part of knowing the nature of God is to understand that He is omnipresent. This means that He is everywhere as expressed in God’s rhetorical questions to Jeremiah, chapter 23, verses 23-24:
“Am I a God at hand, declares the LORD, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him?” declares the LORD. “Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the LORD.”
King David also realized that God is omnipresent, Psalms 139:7-12:
“Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me. If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light about me be night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with you.”
This means that even if I were able to fly to the moon, God would be there and hear any prayer I uttered.
What is the practical meaning for me of God’s omnipresence?
- God knows what I am secretly doing because He is everywhere. I cannot sin in secret. He sees what I do.
- God knows when I do good things, even if no one else sees or compliments me or thanks me. I need not sound a horn to announce my good deeds. God knows without my speaking.
- God will always be omnipresent. Just before Jesus ascended back to heaven, He sent the disciples to make converts and reminded them of His continuing presence, Matthew 28:19-20:
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
- Because God is omnipresent, He knows and sees what satan is doing, especially when he’s tempting me. In this way, God can limit the temptations that satan can provide, 1 Corinthians 10:12-13:
“Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
- The omnipresence of God makes it possible for Him to love me no matter what happens in my life. He knows and will not leave me, Romans 8:38-39:
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
God will always be with me and love me.
In summary, this attribute of God, omnipresence, is a powerful part of God’s nature that benefits His children.
